That sound just came through the speakers on Hoodz Radio: dusty drums, a soul-soaked loop and Benny the Butcher stepping in like he’s got something to say about where he came from. Johnny P’s Caddy is in rotation, and it’s the kind of record that makes you slow down and listen.
The Story Behind Johnny P’s Caddy
“Johnny P’s Caddy” came out January 28, 2022, as the lead single from Benny the Butcher’s album Tana Talk 4. A music video dropped the same day. It was the first release from the project, and it arrived on J. Cole’s 37th birthday.
The title is personal. Johnny Pennick is Benny’s father (Benny’s birth name is Jeremie Damon Pennick), and he appears on the single’s cover art. The caddy is his dad’s nice, big, shiny Cadillac. Benny put out a video explaining the meaning when the single dropped.
What Does the Title Mean?
The title doesn’t show up in the lyrics, but the car is the heart of the record. Benny credits that Cadillac with pushing him toward hip-hop. His father drove him and Westside Gunn around while they listened to music, and that shaped Benny’s musical palate.
On his father, Benny has said: “Johnny P was someone who instilled pride in me early when I was young.” That’s the spirit of the song. It’s a tribute from a son who never forgot who put him in the passenger seat.
Who Made It: Benny, J. Cole and The Alchemist
The Alchemist produced the track. Benny enlisted The Alchemist and Daringer for the production on Tana Talk 4, and this single set the tone. One of The Alchemist’s sample flips on the song was created specifically for the track by singer Nikki Grier and DJ Khalil.
J. Cole joins Benny as the featured guest. Cole had released The Off-Season in 2021, so this was a meeting of two rappers who both came to play. Benny summed up the collaboration in three words: “Iron sharpens iron.”
The Sample: Dexter Wansel’s Theme From the Planets
The drums come from Dexter Wansel’s “Theme From the Planets,” from his 1976 album Life on Mars on Philadelphia International. Wansel produced the original. Those drums give the record its knock, and The Alchemist knows how to let a loop breathe.
The song has since become source material itself. Dave East’s “Game 6 (East Mix)” (2022), Serf’s “The Butcher Soul Flip” (2022) and Ghais Guevara’s “Johnny With Da P’s” (2023) all sampled it. In total it has been sampled in 9 songs.
The Video
The video runs about four minutes. It shows Benny and J. Cole holed up in a house bathed in natural light, looking back through time. The visuals match the song: no flash for flash’s sake, just two rappers reflecting.
How Johnny P’s Caddy Landed
The song debuted at No. 72 on the Billboard Hot 100, Benny’s first career entry on the chart. It spent one week there and peaked at No. 72. Before that, his Burden of Proof (2020) debuted at No. 200 on the Billboard 200, and The Plugs I Met 2 (2021, with Harry Fraud) debuted at No. 33.
The record kept growing. It landed on the RIAA’s first-time Gold and Platinum Class of 2023 list as a Gold single, with Griselda Records, Benny The Butcher and Empire credited. In August 2023, Benny showed off his gold plaque on his Instagram story.
The Diss Debate
After release, some fans read J. Cole’s verse as a subliminal shot at Griselda-style street rap. Benny addressed it on the Breakfast Club. He said he wouldn’t change his verse, and that Cole “was talking to somebody” but he wasn’t sure who.
Years later, on “The Blue Building” from Summertime Butch, Benny rapped that the diss claims were wrong and called Cole a brother. He said they have hour-long conversations. The station’s take: the fan debate made noise, but Benny’s own words are the part worth holding onto.
Where It Sits in Benny’s Catalog
Tana Talk 4 arrived March 11, 2022, on Griselda Records / EMPIRE. It has 12 songs and runs about 40 minutes. It debuted at No. 22 on the Billboard 200 with about 20K first-week units, his best first week as an album. The Tana Talk series goes back to 2004 and his B.E.N.N.Y. days, and this chapter closed out his contractual obligations to Griselda and set up his Def Jam debut.
Benny had already confirmed in 2021 that he’d joined Def Jam. That Def Jam debut became Everybody Can’t Go, and by then “Johnny P’s Caddy” stood as the viral hit of the Tana Talk 4 era. Benny ranks it at the top of his guest verses: “Honestly, ‘Johnny P’s Caddy,’ I have to rank it at the top.”
Why It Stays in Rotation on Hoodz Radio
Here’s the station’s take. This is boom-bap with a heartbeat. It’s a street rapper’s tribute to his father, built on drums with a Philadelphia soul pedigree and produced by an architect of the sound.
Cole’s verse is a big part of the draw, but it’s still Benny’s song. That’s why it fits here. It respects the legacy of the golden era while pushing the movement forward, and it has the weight of a family story.
