Albany Public Library Budget Vote is May 21

Albany Residents to Vote on Public Library Tax Levy and Trustee Election

Albany residents, mark your calendars! On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, the Albany Public Library (APL) invites the community to participate in shaping its future. Voters will decide on the 2024-2025 tax levy and select three trustee seats for the library’s Board of Trustees.

2024-2025 Operating Tax Levy: What You Need to Know

The proposed operating tax levy for the upcoming year is $7,864,740, which represents a two percent increase in the annual total tax levy. Here’s what it means for Albany homeowners:

  • Impact on Homeowners: If the levy is approved, the owner of a $250,000 home would pay approximately $9.15 more in library taxes next year.
  • Staying Within the Cap: This increase is below New York State’s tax cap for APL, ensuring fiscal responsibility while maintaining essential services.

“The decision to increase the library tax levy is never easy,” noted Brigitte Pryor, President of the Board of Trustees. “We focus on securing adequate, sustainable funding for the library’s programs while being mindful of the community’s needs.”

Why This Increase Matters

Executive Director Andrea Nicolay emphasized the importance of this modest budget increase:

“This budget supports our staff and core services, and positions us to leverage partnerships and grant opportunities. These are challenging times for public libraries, and we’re committed to delivering excellence and earning community support.”

Trustee Election: A Chance to Shape APL’s Future

On May 21, voters will also elect three new trustees to the Board:

  • Two positions with full five-year terms (starting July 1, 2024) will go to the highest vote-getters.
  • One position with a one-year term (ending May 2025) will be awarded to the third highest vote-getter.

How to Run for Trustee:

  • Interested candidates can obtain a nominating packet at any of APL’s seven branches or from the library’s website.
  • Completed petitions must be submitted to the City School District of Albany by May 1, 2024.
